Prenatal classes provide education to the expecting families of the normal process of a physiological birth, how to prepare for birth, what to expect with breastfeeding, how to care for your newborn, and getting personal time to ask your questions with an experienced instructor. It can also help reduce anxiety and increase confidence during pregnancy and childbirth. At the end of a prenatal class, you will feel educated, encouraged and empowered to go through this journey in life.
Most couples take prenatal classes in their 3rd trimester. However, there are plenty of benefits to taking them earlier, you will have more time to prepare your mind, body and partner. It takes time to learn and prepare for the life changing event that you will be experiencing. After all the knowledge you obtain, you need to put it into practice and start prepping. Also, taking classes is part of the fun memories of pregnancy, capture the moment, enjoy your time, because it will be a distant memory this time next year.
Doula is a Greek word that literally means "female slave or servant for the child-bearing woman". A doula does not perform medical services or replace your medical team, nor do they take over dads' position, but they come along the side and assist. Birth doulas are part of your support team and should feel like a best friend or mother that has insight in this specialty. Birth doulas specialize in the art of helping women physically, mentally and spiritually birth their babies. Postpartum doulas help families become more comfortable caring for their baby, taking care of a postnatal mother and helping adjust to their new lifestyle.
It is highly recommended for all first-time parents to have a birth doula. Once you experience a doula, you may not want to imagine going through labor again without one. If your last birth was not as you would have hoped for, a birth doula can help you prepare for a more desired delivery. Birth doulas are known to decrease the chances of a cesarean delivery by increasing comfort and using natural techniques to help mom and baby navigate through labor and birth.
There is still plenty for dad to do. A birth doula can never replace the special role dad plays in this process, after all without dad we wouldn't have a birth to attend to. Birth is a very intimate and sacred time just like the conception was, and if we can keep that safe place, mom is likely to achieve her desired birth.
Birth Doulas have become in higher demand in the last decade than ever before. In Las Vegas our doula population has been growing too. It is recommended that you have a couple of interviews with different doulas and find one that fits your needs. Your doula should be someone you can trust and learn from, you should feel comfortable asking questions, she should feel safe and open, someone who is listening to your requests, someone with real understanding of the process of physiological birth. There are only a few doulas that can accept insurances, therefore find out the price and what is included. Most doulas would prefer to be contacted earlier (20-30 weeks) in pregnancy so they can prepare you the most. However, late is better than never, it will be worth your time and finances to find a birth doula.
Yes, I am a birth doula and postpartum doula serving the Las Vegas community. I would love to have a free consultation with you and your family to see if we are a good match. As a Birth Doula, I will empower, encourage and educate mom and her support team for the process of a physiological birth and comforting tools. I am available by phone to answer any questions during and after pregnancy. I will come to your home and help you manage labor and accompany you through the birthing process rather you choose to do that at home, at the birth center or in a hospital. I also offer postpartum services, for those I didn't meet during pregnancy and help the family adjust to life.
